Addressing Substance Abuse Among Kentucky Works Participants
|
| Description: |
This one-day training will explain how to identify and respond to Temporary Assistance to Need Families (TANF) recipients with substance abuse disorders. Emphasis is on identifying recipients with a substance abuse problem, responding to clients who are identified as having a problem, making a successful referral to treatment, and a review of what Kentucky Works Program Policy says about recipients with substance use disorders.

This training is designed to prepare Adoption Workers, Child Protection Services and Recruitment and Certification Workers to explain and provide adoption assistance to the families adopting children that are eligible for assistance. The training will cover the roles of the R&C Workers, the guidelines of the Adoption Assistance Program, how to complete assistance requests, an explanation of the payment process to families and the importance of the post-adoption services. Additional topics to be covered include: negotiations, funding sources, initial requests, renegotiation requests, non-recurring adoption expenses, application, post-legal adoption assistance, and on-going training requirements.

Assessing Needs of Families and Children
|
| Description: |
This training prepares participants to assess the needs of families and children using the Continuous Quality Assessment tool. It assists workers in making safety evaluations and determining the level of risk to address safety issues in families. Participants will learn about safety planning and aftercare planning, this includes the preparation for and the placement of the child, when appropriate. Court processes including emergency custody, how to write petitions, reasonable efforts, TPR overview, absent parent searches, and record keeping will be covered in the Judicial Proceedings component of this training. There is a discussion of the Fair Hearing/CAPTA process as well as appropriate referral for services. This course guides workers toward case planning.
This training is a component in the P&P Academy training series designed for new Protection & Permanency staff and is also a part of Course I - Introduction to Kentucky's Child Welfare System in the Credit for Learning (CFL) program.

|
| Description: |
This three-part training is legislatively mandated and prepares participants to identify family dynamics associated with childhood sexual abuse, advocacy, crisis assistance and intervention, preparation for and participation in judicial proceedings in child sexual abuse cases and to assess the placement needs and prepare for the placement of the child when indicated. This also includes referral to appropriate services to benefit the health and welfare of the child including medical, educational and social services. Also included is consultation with collateral contacts and protective service providers. It prepares participants to assess and interview on required child sexual abuse cases.
Part I of the course work for this training will be conducted via web-based Blackboard. The web-based (Blackboard) assignments will include readings and learning modules to provide a foundation of Childhood Sexual Development, an introduction of the Phases of Child Sexual Abuse and an overview of the Dynamics and Indicators of Child Sexual Abuse.
Participants registering for this training will be expected to participate in a MANDATORY phone conference for which information will be forthcoming.

This three-part training is legislatively mandated and prepares participants to identify family dynamics associated with childhood sexual abuse, advocacy, crisis assistance and intervention, preparation for and participation in judicial proceedings in child sexual abuse cases and to assess the placement needs and prepare for the placement of the child when indicated. This also includes referral to appropriate services to benefit the health and welfare of the child including medical, educational and social services. Also included is consultation with collateral contacts and protective service providers. It prepares participants to assess and interview on required child sexual abuse cases.
The classroom instruction will include techniques for interviewing and assessing victims, siblings, non-offending caregivers, and perpetrators in child sexual abuse cases. It will include assessing for out of home placement and case management in child sexual abuse cases. Participants will apply cultural competence practice principles in assessment and case management of child sexual abuse cases. In addition, participants will develop skills in collaborative practice with law enforcement, medical examiners and legal entities.

This training of trainers is intended for individuals who will be training resource parents for the level of Care Plus. This training is not open to PCCs as they have therapeutic care and this is not a therapeutic model. Topics covered include SOPs related to this area as well as documentation, how to deal with behaviors and how to work with the birth parents of these children.
Participants attending this training will be given a pre and post test, will be required to complete some homework assignments and will be expected to co-lead or teach back sections of the Care Plus material.

In this Blackboard course, participants will learn an adapted form of motivational interviewing appropriate for engaging welfare clients. Case Reviews and the Online 117 Form

| Description: |
This web-based training is designed to allow regionally designated personnel in Family Support Programs to do online case reviews. The PAFS 117 automated form reviews Food Stamps, All Medical Assistance Programs, Kinship Care and all Claims related cases. This tool will provide monthly reports for management and at the end of the month determine case activity and error rates in each county. It allows Family Support Supervisors and other designated Regional Personnel to keep reports and statistics that can be reflected on evaluations.

The Office of the Attorney General and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services are pleased to present investigative interview training for law enforcement and social workers. This training will build upon skills learned in previous child interview courses. This workshop is based on the curriculum developed with BSI (Behavioral Sciences Institute) and national domestic violence experts specifically for intensive Family Preservation Service providers. The curriculum includes practice applications for other in-home service providers as well. The goal of the workshop is to provide participants with a framework for defining and understanding domestic violence and the tools and skills for assessing domestic violence and for developing intervention strategies.
Upon completion of this training, participants will understand common reactions to victimization, understand their own reactions to victimization, learn to identify helpful responses to victimization, understand the variety of reactions children might have to domestic violence, learn to identify domestic violence, learn intervention strategies to use with victims of domestic violence and their children, learn intervention strategies to use with perpetrators of domestic violence.
This is the curriculum that grew out of the original Domestic Violence teleconference sponsored by the IFPS National Network and produced here in Kentucky at EKU a few years ago.

This training is provided to individuals who have been selected as Field Training Specialists. Field Training Specialists are selected through a rigorous process within their region and will provide coaching and mentoring to new employees and other staff.
The training focuses on mentoring skills, adult learning theory, learning styles, communication skills, social allergies and coaching for performance improvement. In addition, participants will learn to utilize behavioral anchors as an evaluation tool and basis for coaching and feedback. This is an interactive training, which allows participants to practice the skills they are learning.

The training is to be used as a tool to enhance Family Support staff's understanding of areas that are currently being cited for errors by Quality Control and Management and Evaluation review. Areas of Food Stamp eligibility that may be addressed are: Income and Income Calculations, Self-Employment Income, Student Status and Income, Shelter Deductions, Documentation, Change Reporting and all of the most recent policy clarifications that are issued that affect Food Stamp eligibility.

The Network Conference is for all members of the Kentucky Foster and Adoptive Parent Training Support Network. All members should plan to attend. To maximize funds we are asking that members give consideration to rooming together (two per room) or sharing a cabin (four per cabin with two per bedroom). All meals will be provided on site.
This year's conference will be focused on the team work theme of "None of us is as good as all of us". Sessions will focus on team work, and how the we can function stronger by working as teams rather than as individuals. Foundations of Youth Work is a new 28-hour, 4-day curriculum designed to provide youth care workers with general guide skills needed to support children and families throughout their journey in care. Foundations of Youth Work is designed for direct line residential youth care workers. Topics covered include: working with families, the developing child, building relationships, communication, structuring the therapeutic milieu, and empathizing with youth in care. Participants will also complete the Myers Briggs Type Inventory and their scores will be interpreted during the training.
Foundations of Youth Work is taught by experienced trainers in the field of youth care. Trainers incorporate role-playing, group discussion, and case studies into the curriculum. Foundation of Youth Work is a beneficial training for all youth care workers and provides a core basic knowledge for new workers entering the field. Participants will be awarded 3 hours of undergraduate credit through Eastern Kentucky University upon successful completion of the training and academic requirements. Tuition is paid through RWCP, so there is no cost to participants.

The NCFAS/NCFAS-R, is the Family Preservation Program (IFPS/FRS/FACTS) assessment tool used to determine how a family is functioning as well as measure the level of imminent risk of out-of-home placement for a family. This training will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss their experiences, challenges and questions about the NCFAS/NCFAS-R. Common difficulties and suggestions for completing the tool will be presented along with strategies for using the NCFAS/NCFAS-R in goal development. The LSCI Foundation Skills Course provides basic de-escalation skills to those professionals working with at-risk youth and families to effectively intervene in the repetitive patterns of self-defeating behavior common in troubled youth.
This three-day beginning level course is based on intervention skills needed to respond successfully to a child’s crisis and incorporates the use of real-life video sequences, modeling of intervention skills, realistic role-playing, and structured small group activities. This program is recognized by the Life Space Crisis intervention Institute and serves as a mandatory prerequisite to the five-day certification course.
There is no fee for this training, however participants are responsible for all travel expenses including lodging.

This online course provides a basic introduction to the foundations and theory of Life Space Crisis Intervention. This course provides carefully structured theoretical and applied instruction in crisis intervention skills for use in reclaiming children and youth involved in patterns of self-defeating behavior. Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) is applicable with troubled and at-risk students in residential and day treatment, special education, alternative schools, public school guidance and inclusion programs, and in mental health and juvenile justice programs. This intervention model is a multi-modal psycho-educational methodology first described by Fritz Redl and David Wineman in their classic book, "The Aggressive Child."
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive 3 hours of undergraduate credit through Eastern Kentucky University. RWCP will pay all tuition expenses.

Medical Indicators of Child Maltreatment

This training prepares participants to recognize common medical indicators of child maltreatment, including bruises, burns, head injuries and bone injuries. Additionally, information will be provided on Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. Participants will learn procedures to seek consultation and for making appropriate recommendations and referrals for treatment. The training will also provide participants with an overview of child fatalities and near fatalities in Kentucky which includes historical trends of data on victim and caregiver characteristics.

This training meets legislative mandate (KRS 194B.530) of a domestic violence "initial course" requirement. This training prepares the participants to understand the relationship of child maltreatment to domestic violence. This includes best practices guidelines for effect of domestic violence on child and adult victims, mandatory reporting, model protocols in responding to domestic violence, assessment of lethality risks to all family members as well as service providers, referral to/for appropriate community services, and appropriate safety and case planning, including out-of-home placement when indicated.

The first day of training will include information on the roles of DCBS and of other agencies in these investigations. The final day of the training will focus on physical management and its relationship to the referrals received in many of our cases.
A portion of this training will be conducted using the Blackboard system. Prior to attending this training, participants will be sent an e-mail that will give directions to the Blackboard website. Participants will be required to complete pre-work assignments using Blackboard that will allow the training to move along at a more rapid pace.

Workplace Violence Prevention

| Description: |
This training for all DCBS staff consists of two components. The first half day of training will be a lecture to discuss recognizing and defusing workplace violence. Expectations of interactions between police representatives and social workers during removals will also be discussed. The second half of the day instructs students on basic self defense tactics and how to get themselves out of certain physical altercations. The training will include practical ways to arrange an office to provide maximum defense and escape potential from a hostile client, introduction of verbal skills and non verbal behavior used to calm a hostile or combative client, and hands-on training in simple self defense procedures that can afford you an opportunity to escape from a potentially dangerous physical situation.
This training is approximately 50% classroom and 50% hands-on type of instruction. Participants are strongly encouraged to wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothing for this training. Wind suits and/or sweat suits are encouraged, but not required.
