Description:
In the past two decades, the mental health and criminal justice fields have become increasing focused on the severity of problems created by sexual offending. Improved research has demonstrated that sexual offending is a problem that spans the life cycle, that it is treatable with positive results, and that there is a clear need to intervene at the earliest possible onset. Because of the developmental aspects of adolescence, it is particularly important to successfully impact sexual offending behavior in juveniles. Treatment providers need to be accurately informed about the therapeutic issues related to juvenile sexual offending and the challenges that are typically encountered in this work. Without this knowledge base, staff and programs are vulnerable to the serious difficulties that can arise when working with this population, or any juvenile population with a sexual victimization history. The Juvenile Sexual Offending Counselor Certification Program (JSOCCP) has been designed to pull the critical information together that is needed to work with this population.
The first phase of JSOCCP is an intensive week long training. The training is offered in a continuing education format however participants will be required to complete selected readings prior to the training, and will be evaluated on their efforts to integrate the concepts and practices. Reading materials will be mailed to participants upon registration (approximately 3-4 weeks before the training) so that they may complete these before attending.
The second phase of the certification process requires the participants to complete a practicum-like experience in their work setting. They will not be asked to work additional hours, but will be expected to practice the concepts and skills learned in the institute portion of the training program. Students will submit videotaped sessions demonstrating their progress in specific skill areas. Faculty will conduct practicum seminars to provide consultation throughout the practicum experience.
